There are many interesting things to see in Belitung, but the best scenery is in the smaller islands scattered along the northern coast. No tour of Belitung would be complete without seeing this one on a boat ride!

This tour visits top attractions such as Lengkuas Island, Batu Berlayar and more and includes free lunch, entrance fees, snorkeling gear, life jackets, and hotel pickup/drop-off.
Alternatively, if you just board at the main port in Tanjung Kelayang, you may be able to find a better priced boat driver by bartering. We did this on one of our trips and everything went smoothly.

In general, Belitung Island tours include 6-7 scenic stops and you can expect to spend at least an hour at each major stop.
The boat driver will take you to various granite rock formations, underwater coral reefs, walking sandbars and even a colonial lighthouse!
An iconic Dutch lighthouse from the 1800s is located here and you can still climb to the top today! The 18th floor balcony overlooks the granite cliffs and the blue water below.

Indonesia: Bangka Belitung Islands
Snorkeling in Belitung is fantastic, with very healthy corals and friendly fish. Just watch out for the sharp sea urchins, we saw a bunch of them sitting amongst the coral. You don’t want to step on one.
Batu Berlayar Island is a small sand circle with rocks and stones scattered around it. It’s kind of like a messy, natural Stonehenge of the ocean.
There is even a small cave that you can walk through to get between the main boulders in the center of the island.
Foreign Tourists Visits Increase To Bangka Belitung
We visited Pulau Pasir in July and in that month the sandbar was at its biggest in the morning, but in the afternoon it was still shallow enough to wade on!
Starfish appear here often in the shallow waters due to the sea currents that press against the sandy shore.
If you take a quick 3 minute walk to the back of Pulau Kelayang, there is a rainbow colored cave and a natural rock pool. It’s a charming place.
Mining Tin From The Sea In Indonesia
It is a small island near Kelayang, with perfect white sand and not many visitors. There is a small hut in the trees, but I don’t think anyone lives there anymore.
This is named after a rock at the back of the island that resembles the beak of Garuda, the legendary bird sketch of the Hindu and Buddhist religions.
Most Belitung tours seem to skip this island, but it has a nice beach and some flat rocks to relax on.
Belitung Travel Guide 2023
We didn’t spend much time exploring this island, but it’s at the top of our list the next time we go back to Belitung!
Pulau Burung Island gets its name from its shape, which resembles a flying bird.
You may have to pay a little extra to the boat driver to go to this island as it is an extra 15-30 minutes further from the main tourist route.

We paid my husband an extra 100k rupiah (~$7) to add Pegador, Burung and Kelamin islands to our boat tour.
This island gets its name from a rock shaped like a penis. If you scale the main boulder in the center of the sandbank, you can get a great view of the entire island from above.

Alternatively, if you just board at the main port in Tanjung Kelayang, you may be able to find a better priced boat driver by bartering. We did this on one of our trips and everything went smoothly.
Tanjung Kelayang Festival 2018 On Beautiful Belitung Island
It’s the dry season in Indonesia, so it’s less rainy, with more sun, smoother seas and better visibility for snorkeling.
The months to avoid are from November to January when there is much more rain. If you must go during the rainy season, allow yourself a few extra days as a buffer in case of bad weather. Belitung Island is about the same size as Bali and just like Bali has so many great things to see and do. It is even recognized as a UNESCO Geopark for its unique landscapes.

The best way to get to Belitung Island is to rent a scooter or a private car with a driver. You can book one of these at your hotel or with Billitone Capture (+62 853-1555-5288).
The roads on Belitung Island are in excellent condition and the traffic is surprisingly light. We don’t usually travel by scooter, but when we saw how open Belitung’s roads were, we couldn’t help ourselves!
If you need a private airport transfer by car, you can book it on Klook for only 75k rupiah (~$5 USD). In the city, short trips can be made using the Grab or GoJek apps.
