Mental health as a human right means that everyone has the highest possible standard of mental health, which includes the right to be protected from threats to mental health, the right to accessible, affordable, acceptable and quality healthcare and the law. for freedom, independence and inclusion in the community. Mental health is a basic human right for all people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or socioeconomic status. Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being, as it affects our physical health, our well-being, our relationships with others and our lives.

It affects education, work, productivity, relationships, security, peace and development. The global cost of mental illness was estimated at $2.5 billion in 2010 and is predicted to reach $6 billion by 2030.

Therefore, we must treat mental health as a human right and a global priority. We need to increase funding and resources for mental health care at all levels; improve data collection and research on mental health issues and interventions; reinforce political will and commitment to prioritize mental health; raise awareness and reduce stigma; promote prevention and early intervention; provision of quality, rights-based care; ensure the participation and empowerment of people with lived experience; development of cooperation and coordination between interested parties; integration of mental health into other sectors; monitor progress and report; and innovative solutions to emerging challenges. By doing this, we can transform everyone’s mental health. The World Health Organization estimates that almost one billion people have a mental health disorder. Despite the magnitude of mental illness, relatively few people around the world have access to quality mental health services.
